IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED .
. .
If you peruse the pages of NB&F every issue, you’re probably accustomed to seeing the finest natural bodybuilders in the world. What does it take to reach this pinnacle of perfection? Well, it goes without saying that training and diet are paramount, but let’s not forget the influence of Mother Nature. In fact, if the lady in charge doesn’t deal you a pretty good hand, you’ll be hard-pressed to reach the top. But that should never stop you from trying!
Three INBF athletes who compete regularly and maintain a never-say-die attitude are Mickey Morris, Luis Casalduc and Christy Donat. Mickey hails from Kilgore, Texas, and is 50 years old. But that doesn’t prevent him from competing in all of the local events. In fact, since he first stepped onstage as a Master, he’s continuously improved – winning the Texas Shredder Over-50 class last May! Making his living as a welder, Mickey recognizes the importance of hard work and he has a simple training motto: "Train as hard as possible, be as consistent as you can be and make bodybuilding a part of your daily life!"

New Jersey’s Luis Casalduc competes in all of the INBF shows in the New York metropolitan area. In addition, he recently traveled to the Grand Cayman Island to do battle in the Caribbean Grand Prix. He began his foray into the world of competitive bodybuilding as a novice entrant and has gradually climbed through the ranks to the open division as the years have passed. And he continues to improve with each outing. But his success is more apparent when you consider his attitude: "I enjoy doing bodybuilding shows and meeting new friends," he explains. "Each show is like a family reunion!"

Speaking of competing frequently, no one has been under the lights more in the past five years than Warren, New Jersey’s pride and joy, Christy Donat. Another fixture at INBF shows in the Northeast who made the trip to Cayman, as well as the Barbados Grand Prix, Christy’s exploits are not limited to bodybuilding endeavors alone. She also competes in Figure competitions, doing double duty in just about every show she enters. But Christy is quick to point out her success owes itself to a concerted effort. The successful N.J. personal trainer credits her coach Ian Mercer of Merciless Muscle Training, as well as her teammates and friends, and thanks them for all of their love and support.

    A STAR IS BORN!
As anybody who has ever promoted a bodybuilding contest can attest, the day of the event can be filled with nerve-wracking experiences. But I’ve got news for all you contest promoters out there: If you think you’ve been through hell when show time rolled around, you ain’t scratched the surface! Consider the tale of the INBF’s premier Southeastern promoter, Damian Fisher.

Damian and wife Retha, owners of renaissance Fitness personal training in Greensboro, N.C., have been promoting shows for many years. So, when they scheduled their 2004 Natural Renaissance Bodybuilding & Figure Classic for a typical Saturday in April, they no doubt expected it would be business as usual. But they didn’t bank on the stork showing up and interrupting the festivities!

As prejudging was being staged, Retha was at the hospital giving birth to their first child! Fortunately, head judge Wayne Gondreaux was holding down the fort at the contest.

Max was born on April 3rd and shortly thereafter, Damian was on his way back to the night show. Rumor has it he’s already doing multiple reps with his rattle! Congratulations to the Fishers on simultaneous jobs well done! To contact Renaissance Fitness, visit www.renfit.com.
  GO FIGURE!
Who could blame Cayman Islands competitor Agueda Arenia Broderick if she’s been discouraged? After all, she had achieved quite a bit of success in both bodybuilding and figure contests, but was competing with a severe handicap: In untested events obviously, drug-free athletes are at a severe disadvantage.

Agueda entered her first INBF drug-tested show in 2004 and reaped immediate reward. At the Natural Caribbean Grand Prix Bodybuilding & Figure Championships on the Grand Cayman Island in August, Agueda brought home the Figure short class trophy, earning a WNBF Figure pro card on her first try. But leaving the stage with some hardware is nothing new for this 4-11, 104-lb. dynamo.

"Train like a champ," Broderick says when queried as to her secret for success. But truth be told, it wasn’t always that simple. "I was petite – some would say skinny – when

I started," she reveals. "I did not like how I looked, so I began training. But now, things are quite different. Fitness has had a great effect on me, and I feel motivated and energized throughout the day!"

Eight years of working out has really agreed with this 30-year-old native of Grand Cayman. But if you think her success in the untested arena ever made her consider enhancing her performance with pharmaceuticals, guess again. "Drug-free is definitely the way to go," she exclaims.
